Vic: Pilot says he knew he could not land plane
A Victorian pilot who struggled to control a plane after its tail was ripped-off by
a skydiver's parachute says he realised there was no hope of landing the aircraft.
The male skydiver was killed and 10 others had to jump for their lives in the mid-air
tragedy at Nagambie in central Victoria yesterday.
Pilot BARRY DAWSON was able to keep the plane in the air long enough for the ten other
skydivers to jump to safety.
He then jumped from the aircraft using an emergency parachute, seconds before it crashed.
Chief instructor with Skydive Nagambie, DON CROSS, says Mr DAWSON's actions averted
further catastrophe.
The Bureau of Air Safety Investigation is inquiring into fatal incident.
The dead man, in his early 30s, was an experienced skydiver from Melbourne who had
made more than 2,000 parachute jumps.
