Qld; "Bad tooth bandit" arrested in Brisbane police swoop
BRISBANE, Dec 15 AAP - Police have arrested the so-called "bad tooth bandit", the man
they believe has been responsible for holding up 18 financial institution branches in
Brisbane since the middle of last year.
Metropolitan North Regional Crime Coordinator Detective Inspector John Hegarty said
the arrest took place this morning in the southside Brisbane suburb of West End.
It followed several months of investigations by around 30 police in an operation code-named
"Immerse".
The man, who allegedly used notes to demand money, was named the bad tooth bandit by
staff in the credit unions and buildings that were his main targets, Inspector Hegarty
said.
The moniker stuck after witnesses' descriptions describing him as having bad teeth
were repeated several times in media reports.
Police believe that no weapon was ever produced during the hold-ups.
A 38-year-old man has been charged with 18 robbery offences and was due to appear in
the Brisbane Magistrates Court tomorrow morning, Inspector Hegarty said.
