NSW: Inquest into death of Pvt Kovco will hear new evidence

A jury's been told an inquest into the death of Private JAKE KOVCO will hear a large
amount of new evidence .. gathered since the military inquiry.

Coronial proceedings into the Baghdad shooting of Private KOVCO have begun in Sydney today.

The 25-year-old was shot in the head with his own service pistol at barracks outside
the Australian embassy in April 2006.

A six person jury was sworn in at Glebe Coroner's Court to hear five weeks of evidence.

In a break with tradition for NSW inquests .. they'll be asked to return a finding
on the manner and cause of death.

Counsel assisting the inquest JOHN AGIUS has urged the three men and three women ..

to put widespread publicity about Private KOVCO'S death and the subsequent military inquiry
out of their minds.

He says the inquest will in no way be a "re-hash" of the military proceedings.



EDS: on the advice of the coroner .. no further reference can be made to the military
board of inquiry findings at this stage
